What is Vocabulary Pre-Teaching?
Pre-teaching is a common practice for building vocabulary skills. Pre-teaching is simply the teaching of content, specifically new words, prior to performing an activity, test, or exercise. This teaching is meant to be very intentional and fairly intensive to have a positive effect on comprehension.
How is it implemented?
The NSW Centre for Effective Reading outlines 5 steps to the pre-teaching process:
1. The teacher is to preview the concept or topic that is set for instructions and select key terms from that section. NSW suggests no more than three to five terms and sets specific guidelines for term selection:
- Important of the word for understanding the text
- Students prior knowledge of the word and the content to which it relates
- The existence of multiple meanings of the word
-Opportunities for grouping words together to enhance understanding a concept
(NSW, 2011)
2. Pronounce the word if pronunciation is difficult or will prove challenging for the age level.
3. Prove the words meaning through an appropriate definition. It is suggested that you use the word in everyday language as dictionary definitions can prove to be an unclear example for some students.
4. Use the word in a sentence to clarify and give the word context.
5. Read the text and clarify words that have been the focus of pre-teaching if necessary.
Below is an example of pre-teaching vocabulary for a reading lesson and offers a great example of how to utilize pre teaching in the classroom.
