What is List - Group - Label?
List-Group-Label is a vocabulary strategy that engages students in a three step process to organize and understand content area vocabulary and concepts.
This strategy is very effective because it gives students the guide to recognizing the relationship between words and concepts using knowledge that they have already obtained and mastered about specific topics. This strategy makes words more animated through discussion and reflection on the connections between words in the same content area or topic. By using critical thinking skills, students master new vocabulary and content in an active and engaging way. (Reading Rockets inc., 2015)
How is it Implemented?
This strategy, like several others, utilizes a specifically stepped process to help students:
1. List: Have students brainstorm words that they believe are related to a specific topic from the readings that is selected by the teacher.
2. Group: Divide into small groups or partners. Each group will be charged with grouping the list of words into appropriate subcategories. As they group, challenge your students to explain why they placed certain words together and discarded others.
3. Label: Have students titles or labels for their groups of words. These labels should be a reflection of their reasoning for grouping the words as they did.
Below is an example of a List - Group - Label worksheet before and after instruction.

This strategy, like several others, utilizes a specifically stepped process to help students:
1. List: Have students brainstorm words that they believe are related to a specific topic from the readings that is selected by the teacher.
- Visually display student's responses on a chart or graphic,
- If there are words that don't best fit the concept, do not critique or edit. It should be left to the grouping process where students will hopefully see that those words do not belong.
2. Group: Divide into small groups or partners. Each group will be charged with grouping the list of words into appropriate subcategories. As they group, challenge your students to explain why they placed certain words together and discarded others.
